D Banumaiahs PU College

Description

D Banumaiah’s PU College

This Institution was founded by Dharmapraksha Rao Bahadur Sahukar D. Banumaiah of revered memory, one of the renowned philanthropists of Mysuru, a man who started his career as helper in a shop and soon rose to eminence to be known as the merchant prince of Mysuru. Since he lost his father at the tender age of seven years and he could not get formal education, he had a yearning for providing affordable education to the children of the subaltern, marginalized and oppressed classes. Along with other like-minded persons of his community he started Kunchitigar Anglo-vernacular School in 1908. Consequent upon some divergent opinion amongst the members of the school committee in 1912, he took over the management of the AV School solely. In 1916 it was converted as D. Banumaiah’s School. He built a magnificent building for the school which was inaugurated in 1917. This edifice is today regarded as a heritage building in the city of palaces. Soon the school was upgraded and became a high school. D. Banumaiah formed a Trust in order to run the school and registered it on 02-10-1919 for the purpose of encouraging education among the members of Kunchitigar and other backward communities. Decades before the government introduced free primary education he provided free education to all. This shows his foresight and benevolence. He gave away a major portion of his hard-earned wealth for various noble causes - educational, social, religious and cultural. An ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi, D. Banumaiah, as the Chairman of the Reception Committee, welcomed him whenever the Mahatma visited Mysuru during the third and fourth decades of the twentieth century.

In the year 1949 the Intermediate College of Commerce was started by D. Banumaiah’s son D.B. Vishvambharaiah and grandson B.V. Banumaiah, as a fitting monument of the great merchant founder. It was upgraded in the year 1953 to impart B.Com. education. It was the first ever private commerce college in the state of Old Mysuru. B.A. degree course was introduced in 1959. B.B.M. (now B.B.A.) course was started 1975. During the stint of B.V. Banumaiah as Principal of the College and President of the Institution, the College as well as the School advanced by leaps and bounds. B.V. Banumaiah was a great visionary and eminent educator. He introduced midday meal scheme for the poor students of the school in the sixties. Tutorial system and summer school concept were also introduced. A unique Planning Forum was formed in the College to familiarize the students with the Five Year Plans of the Government of India.
